I should add I live in southern california and I'm wondering if cleaning the slots and filter applies to heating as well. We only run the heat in the winter.

If it's a heat pump, and/or you live in FL, why not keep up the maintenance. If it's just an AC unit and you don't use it for an extended period, at least have it serviced before starting it up again, when you do need it.

the dirt on vents is caused by static it is not dirt from filters. if you want to do the same as summer.
