I mean I have been extremely poor in my life and even homeless. i've had to boil water for purity and have gone days without food. I've lived on the streets and lived in condemned buildings before. Why is it that people think all americans are rich or well off?

kerilynn:
Why are you so testy from a simple question. There are many people in other countries who think all americans are living the glamour life and don't know that we have poor and hungry people here too. Yes I'm a lot better off then I once was, but still not rich. There's no need to get upset. i'm not downing america, I just want to know why other countries feel just because we have a richer economy that everyone is rich. Calm down!

It's because we make more money that they do. Tourists show up in their country with what seems like an unlimited supply of cash and it seems like wealth to them. I just got back from Romania, where people make a couple hundred a month if they can find work. Of course, cigarettes cost $1.10, there's no property tax, and the overall cost of living is substantially less. They think we're rich because they have no idea how much it COSTS to live in America.

No...i think there are many poor Americans and so are rich....there is something clear though...its either they are really rich(so much ) and others are pow (more than poor)....there is a very small middle-class....and that's the cause of the financial system of America....so no i dint think that all Americans are rich i think there are poor Americans...lots of them i hope they get help soon...maybe if the Americans money must be spent in a different way...!!! its not reasonable that someone has 100 million dollar and across town...people are dying of poverty

The sad things that you have experienced are not the type of things that Americans want to talk about. When you see TV, you see all of the glamour and all of the beautiful places to go (all of which costs a lot of money).

No city wants to publicize the poverty that is rampant in so many areas, so they focus on the Hollywood images of beautiful people enjoying beautiful lifestyles.

The truth is that reality sucks. They should be doing more to help those who need help, instead of glorifying those who already are successful.

I don't know why they think that. But I hear it on TV all the time "America, the richest country" I mean they must not have included me in that count. I struggle everyday. And I work 40 hours plus every week. So this picture of this "rich America" defiantly does not include me.

Its just a perception people have. A good example is my cousin, who is a Brit. He's here in the US, and all his old friends back in England think he is living some rock star life. We both think its hilarious. In reality is ex-wife took him for a ride and he had to do a bankruptcy, and fight a court battle to keep in touch with his daughter. He's slowly getting back on his feet (I help him out sometimes) but we both get a kick out of sending his friends pics of him sitting in a caddy (friends) on a harley (also a friends) standing at the shooting range with an expensive rifle (mine). Its just funny, and one day he will have all those things if he wants them. He's a hard worker.

Our average standard of living is much higher than most countries. However even the richest have poverty and the poorest have rich. People just want to generalize everything.

Well, I am a Brit - and I certainly know that isn't the case. There isn't a single country on this planet where it's entire inhabitance is rich! Besides, according to Maslow's heirarchy of needs - if you have food, shelter, and a level of safety - who needs affluence?
