Resolution is actually stuck at 640x480. I had to re install my operating system yesterday and now I cant change my screen resolution. Before the re installation I was using 1024x768. I located the list all modes option, but 1024x768 isnt listed. how can I change the resolution? I have programs for which I need a higher resolution.

If you have the install cd from your graphics card, you will probably have to install its drivers. If you do not, try going to the manufacturer's website, looking up your product, and then should have recent drivers. This might be the best method anyways to ensure you are getting the latest and greatest.

Two things restrict your resolution: Monitor Driver and Video Card Driver.

If you have installed your Video driver properly, then check your Monitor driver.

In Windows XP, click "Start", "Run", then type "sysdm.cpl" and click "OK". When the System Properties appear, click on the "Hardware" tab, then the "Device Manager" button. Click the "Plus" symbol beside "Monitors" to expand and reveal the name of your monitor driver. Right-click on your monitor driver and select "Update Driver..."

If it asks if you want to connect to Windows Update, Select "No" and click "Next". Select "Install from a list..." and click "Next". Select "Don't search..." and click "Next". Remove the check in the box for "Show compatible hardware" and you will find "Super VGA 1024x768 in the model list.

If you don't have your Video driver installed, then we have a complex procedure for searching for the right driver, but that should be a different question.

Make sure that you have the proper video drivers installed. The operating system may not have the drivers or may have an incorrect version. Go to the manufactures website if you do not have a CD with the drivers.

Many new graphics drivers are updated when you visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.

Go to this site, click on "Custom" (2nd button on the screen), then on the left, click "Hardware". There should be a few items in your list. Select them and install them.
