I have a Toshiba A70-RT1 laptop that has an output of 19V, 4.74A which needs a new power supply cord. I'm having trouble finding the same cord for replacement, so I wondered if a 19V, 6A output would be compatible, or if it would damage the laptop.

As long as the VOLTAGE is the same, you've no problem.

The higher AMP rating of the new supply simply means it will handle a larger load than the original power supply.

YES... this may fatally damage your computer since most electronic devices (resistors, capacitors, inductors) need the specific amount of current for it to run/operate properly. An overload in current or underload in current might burn these up.. therefore damaging your laptop. These current measurements are designed carefully by engineers for the laptop to be working properly, don't mess it up, it's better to be looking more for that replacement power supply than to face the consequence of looking for a new laptop.

The replies stating tha the ampere rating is the draw from the laptop are correct!! Th amperage rating of power supplies and cords are what they can safely handle without damage to it self.

Imposssible to damage the notebook, the ampere demand are from the notebook. If the notebook ask for 4A, the adaptor will supply 4A. It will never supply more than ask for from notebook.
In fact, a 6.3A power supply is a better choice as it will run cooler.
Trust me, i was a power supply designer!!
