I know... 9/11 cheesy to be bringing this up. But I figure, why not get a decent question to tie in with the anniversary and show our national consiousness in remembrance, etc. etc. etc.

So the question.... the Hassan character was fascinating and the wrestler, Steve Copani could wrestle his *** off. He called into question rascist stereotyping going on and shoved it in your face. It's a shame the character didn't work out...

Who remembers Hassan and what happened to get his character written off the show? What did you think of the character and his wrestling?

There are actual wrestling fans on this board? It was in the news and there was a big stink about this character. It was the first time a network dictated policy to the WWE....

I don't follow professional wrestling, but I do remember the Hassan character in one match getting piled on by other wrestlers in a staged demonstration against Arab-Americans which I frankly found disgusting. I just looked Copani up on Wikipedia, and read about the controversy concerning his exit. Considering the setting in which he operated, I find it hard to believe his rants about stereotyping were either genuine or sincere, though I understand where he's coming from; I try not to judge anyone, and really cringe at the continued association of Islam and terrorism, as if the whole religion is responsible and not just a radical minority.

I think he was a good wrestler but I feel like the story line went too far. I think character was a good idea, Hassan feeling like he was being stereotyped for his race/religion but it really went too far when he had the guys wearing black masks and would act as if he was cutting his opponents throat. Meanwhile in the news kidnapped reporters are being beheaded, this was tasteless character development by the WWE. Perhaps the character would have worked better in a different era.

I miss him
he was great

They didnt even write him off, they just never mentioned him
they got in trouble with UPN, they did something that was too much like a terrorist, he kidnapped someone or blew something up or something. I just remember the media went crazy over it.

and i feel bad for Davari, there went his career

he ruffled so many feathers with the average red state, white trash wrestling fan.

I thought he was pretty good. Good character and good wrestler. Not sure what happened with him. He probably just pissed off the wrong person backstage.
