It turns out that the reactionary and politically correct 90s killed a perfectly fine sport. Apart from the obvious brouhaha concerning the launching of live human beings at stationary objects, there was quite a to do over the plight of the bowling pins as well.
Though you might believe that the maltreatment of little people was what brought the sport low, it was not. The midgets got a bit of enjoyment from participating. Blows to the head and inner ear damage from being flung about was said to give them a mild euphoria, something akin to smoking a bowl of chronic.
It was through the efforts of People for the Ethical Treatment of Bowling Pins that midget bowling was ended. PETBP contended that damage to the pins from soft tissue wear and tear, along with the occasional DNA sample, was much worse that being knocked about by 15 pound rubber balls. And they chanted, "How do you think it makes the pins feel," at the dazed midgets during protests.
After a few weeks the practice of bowling with midgets was stopped and the PETBP people turned their attentions to another cause and soon became known as PETPEEVE, People for the Ethical Treatment of Penguins Eating Elves, Vampires and Excrement.

It turned into midget basketball, but was unsuccessful because they found the little fellows shaving the point spread by grabbing the hoop before they went through the net. They tried midget skeet shooting, but for obvious reasons it didn't make it. I hear that midget soccer is in the works, but there have been problems with the midgets protesting having to paint themselves black and white.

All the little giggle sissy liberals heard about it, and got their panties in a wad. They wrung their hands, and said "This is just TERRIBLE!"
So they all pitched a hissy fit, got it stopped, and put all the poor midgets out of work.
