Here it is the 5 year anniversary of September 11th. Before 2001, it was just another day on the calendar. Now, it is a day that will ring out in our hearts forever... Where were you and what were you doing when you heard of this terrible day?

I was at home, with my then 2 year old toddeling around. I was a poor single mother at the time, so I had no cable, and ran television off of bunny ears... most days it BARELY came through, but on September 11th, it came through with NO snowy picture. I was mortified... and my daughter who had no idea what was going on, looked at me and said, "what's wrong, mommy?" I just grabbed her and hugged her so tight... It made me realize everything I had, and will ever have, and how precious things really were.

When I walked around my town, the eerie looks on his face were something I will NEVER forget. Everyone walked with their heads low... everyone was silent... it was terrifying!

SHAME ON YOU Cému for thinking that this question is a "sappy" one. You should be terribly ashamed for even hitting the send button!

I was standing in the kitchen of my fire station, we had just finished cleaning up the station, when one of the firefighters I work with started yelling about a plane hitting a building. I remember seeing the flames and debris from the impact and I knew that fellow firefighters were going to have there hands full helping all the people trying to escape the building,,, then I saw the second plane hit,, I knew then that this wasn't just an accident and I really started to get worried, not just for the people of New York, but for all Americans. I was deeply saddened when the buildings started to collapse, I knew that there were many many people still in the buildings.

I just got into the car to go to the store when I heard on the radio something about the first plane. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. About 30 seconds after I turned on the radio the second plane hit and I heard the announcer's live reaction. I got such a chill up my spine 'cause I started to think this might begin happening all over. When I got home I turned on CNN and watched riveted as events unfolded. I will never forget the sights and sounds of that day even if I am in Wisconsin. My heart goes out to all those who lost someone 5 yrs. ago and I STILL get very emotional when this date arrives each year.
God bless the U.S.A.!!!!

I was in Madrid (where after a time something horrible would happen, too). I went out of bed and my cousin told me: "The Twin Towers in NY don't exist anymore"... I didn't understand a word... I told him: Are you crazy? I though it was a (very bad) joke... But he was crying. Then, when I looked at the TV screen, I cried too...
I will never forget the horrible pictures. I felt really bad and I share today the same sadness, since we have lived a little bit of that horror in Madrid, too.
I would like to tell this to all the good american people:
Every building can be rebuild; every broken heart can be mended. Life goes on; and we want our lives to be BEAUTIFUL, no matter what others want.
Hugs.

I was at my desk at work. I had just gotten in and heard on the radio what just happened. THen I was glued to the internet looking at all news sources until my idiot boss called me into a meeting. I then told my boss the meeting was ridiculous when compared to the deaths that are occuring and not knowing if we were going to be harmed next. I told my boss I was leaving for the day and then went home and hugged my baby girl so tight!

I turned on my TV at like 8:30 that morning right before it happened. Then I spent the rest of the day watching it all unfold just thinking WTF. One of the things i'll never forget is hearing Dan Rather say Holy F*ck on live TV when the first tower came down. My birthday is no longer the most important day in September since then. It's a day to remember, and pray it never happens again.

I was stationed in FT Hood, TX and was training at a tank gunnery range. My company commander came out and gathered us up and began telling us this fantastic story of terrorist attacks in New York City. I did not know what he was talking about or if I could even believe him. I thought it was a prep for more training. Very quickly we left our tanks, we were taken back to the orderly room, and we were allowed to go home. Slowly I began to realize what had happened and I just want to be with my wife to make sure she was safe.

I was at work, someone called another employee and told them what had just happened, we turned on a small TV and watched as the two buildings came down. It was a picture I will never forget.

Working in Atlanta, talking to someone about some project and the word flew through our building and everyone went to all the news sites (which were so slow because everyone was looking for information).

I was home from work with my then 2 year old son, who was sick. We were watching cartoons and my husband called from work and said turn on the news. When I did I immediately started crying, things like that aren't supposed to happen here.

In a library in the UK, finishing a few job applications, noticed a minor comment on the teletext service saying Minor fire in WTC. Little did I know, fifteen minutes later when I got home the worst nightmare was occuring in front of my eyes. Thought it was like a movie scene on tv.
