You've actually done both, as you've suceeded in failing, and you've suceeded in passing your exam, so you've suceeded more than you've failed... but you have ultimately acheived what you set out to achieve, which is an acheivement in itself, so yeah...

but quite why anyone would want to suceed in failing is beyond me

Definition of success: achieving your goal, no matter what it is. Therefore, if your goal is NOT TO PASS the examination and you do pass it, you have failed (to achieve your goal), even though you have 'passed' (the exam).

I can think of several reasons why it would be rational to sit an exam with the intention to fail. For example, your parents want you to try for Oxford but you really want to go to Sunderland. You sit the Oxford entrance exam, so as not to alienate your parents, but the last thing you want to do is pass that exam!

Well, if you intended to fail, and you succeeded, then you failed to achieve your outcome. But by failing to achieve your outcome, you have succeeded in failing....in all, its just a bit of mind boggling word play!
