I need to completly disconnect my car battery so i can reset the computer system in my car. I havn't done it for a long time so can't remember if there is anything i need to know. Something about using metal tools around a live battery doesn't seem right. Do i have to take one of the sides off first (posotive/negative) or does it not matter. Thanks for help in advance.

you take off the positive side of the battery. if your post are on the side, you can use a pair of pliers. they usually have rubber handles. just don't touch them to any metal while on the post. you won't get a shock from touching the battery terminals.

Disconnect the ground side of the battery first - on modern cars, this is the negative side. You needn't worry about using metal tools around the battery as long as you do not short between the terminals, or between the non-ground terminal and ground. To reset the computer on most cars, you need to consult a shop manual because there are other things you need to do such as open and close a door or press for a length of time on the brake pedal in addition to disconnecting the battery. Good luck!

You always take the negative side off first ... the main reason for doing this, is if your wrench comes into contact with the frame of the car you will not get shocked (ground to ground). You shouldn't have to disconnect your positive, as once the negative is disconnected, your circuit is broken. Sometimes this does not reset the computer of the vehicle, as some of the newer vehicles have batteries to help them maintain their memory in case of a power failure in the vehicle. Taking your vehicle to a place like advance auto and having them hook the diagnostic tool to read your computer and asking them to clear the codes that way is usually the best way to do it.

unhook the positive if you are doing it to reset the computer because there are so many things and ways for the battery to stay grounded that it wont reset the computer you dont need to unhook the negative unless you are taking the battery out

Unhook the POSITIVE (RED) side first. Electronics guy is confused. If you are resetting your computer in your car you don't even need to take the negative off.

UNHOOK Neg. - side first... Shouldn't have to unhook the positive side as there is an open in the circuit now.

Take the positive side off first..No sparks allowed..Don't have face over batterry in case you blow it up..Not much risk with new ones as they are sealed
