i think a DOS boot disk is the best solution. remember if you really need Real mode and not virtual x86 mode, you can't have himem.sys or emm386.exe (or any other memory managers) in your config.sys or autoexec.bat files.

If you have a CD writer, you can download an "image" of a bootable CD, and burn it to a disc. If you don't have a CD writer, try looking through your CD collection. Sometimes, you may find a CD that is bootable, like the Windows 98 Setup CD, Windows 95, or even Norton AntiVirus 2002.

If you find a CD that boots into DOS mode, but won't give you a DOS Prompt, try pressing F8 when starting -just after the beep- and choosing "Safe Mode Command Prompt" from the Startup Menu.

I have no clue what kind of a memory check can be done in DOS but here is what I use.

Go to www.download.com
Perform a search and download and install FreeRAM Pro
This is a FREE utility that will put a small RAM meter on the System Tray in the lower right hand corner of your screen. It displays how much of your RAM you are not currently using. Also if you hover your cursor over the RAM meter it will display your RAM usage as a percent of RAM free.
You can right click on the meter and click on restore and tweak the settings if you'd like. It can also be set to display CPU usage.
To close the window, click on Minimize and select System Tray.

If you decide you want to uninstall FreeRAM Pro you have to right click on the RAM meter, and then click on Information at the top of the window, and then select Uninstall.

If you'd like to see how much RAM is being used by the executables that are running on your PC:
hold down Ctrl + Alt + Del
This will open the Windows Task Manager window
Click on the Process tab and review the RAM usage for each .exe in the Mem Usage column on the far right.

This sounds like it is a lot easier than using DOS to me.
Good Luck

Burning programs like Nero have the option to create a bootable CD. You use an image of a bootable floppy disk and floppy disk emulation. Bootdisk.com have disk images but I've never tried one with Nero.

With XP there is NO real dos on it. You will need to boot to a dos boot disk. Go to www.bootdisk.com and make a dos boot disk on a cd rom.

Go to the following web page and get the CD. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ You will be able to run a bunch of different utilities. You will have to have a burner to make your own disk.
