About how much would it cost to have my broken furnace replaced. It is the horizontal type that sits in my attic. My house is 1400 sq ft... I'm just looking for a ballpark estimate, and if you know the cost breakdown for labor that would be great.

It is a gas furnace. The quote I've received is in the $2500 to $3000 range, which appears on the high side. (I live in So. Calif.)

When replacing a furnace the most important thing you need to remember is to get at least 3 estimates, and always compare Apples to Apples. Always request an estimate that contains a complete breakdown of parts, material and labor. With that being said you will need to have a basic understanding of what you are looking for when requesting an estimate from a HVAC contractor.
It’s very hard to give a ballpark figure without knowing exactly what you would like to replace your current unit with. The cost of the furnaces can vary greatly based on the type of furnace it is. For example, an ultra high efficiency furnaces made by any particular manufacturer can cost hundreds of dollars more than a standard efficiency unit of the same BTU rating made by the same manufacturer. You should call a heating contractor explain your heating needs and request information on your replacement options. Take your time, do your research and you won’t get ripped off. Nor will you end up owning something you don’t need.
With the unstable nature of energy supply and price the installation of high-efficiency furnaces should be a major consideration of anyone replacing a furnace. Studies have shown that homes where a standard efficacy furnace has been replaced with a 90+% efficient unit, can experience an average cost savings of 22% on their annual heating bill.
HVAC contractors labor rates vary by area as well, but on average you can figure somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 to $80 an hour. All HVAC contractors should have the mechanical credentials that are required by your state and local municipality. Do not hesitate to inquire about contractors credentials, and should you receive a bid with suspiciously low labor rates definitely request a copy of the contractor’s credentials.
I really have to question some of the prices being quoted here in some of the other answers $400 for a furnace really makes me wonder what you would be getting.

You absolutely need a CERTIFIED HVAC contractor to replace your furnace. The starting price for a basic American Standard furnace is about $1500. You may incur other fees for removal and disposal of your old equiptment, necessary duct modification etc.

It would depend on if it is electric or gas. A gas furnance unit is only like $400, if you go to home depot or their webpage. Your would need to have it installed, so the whole thing is like $800-$1000. However do the furnance unit is sometimes in several pieces, a piece for the furnance, blower moter, A-Frame Coil--for A/C. So you may only need to but one piece or all pieces, some units are built in only one piece. I personal like multi-piece units, it is easier to maintain/replace.

I believe you could have it replaced for $1,000 or less. Sometimes if you buy the unit yourself, you can hire an electrician (certified) to install it for you. Just make sure that person knows what he's doing with installation.
