I try to split the difference and get a reasonably sporty car below 30k (that's Canadian). I've got a Nissan Sentra SE-R SpecV. Reasonably fast, good handling and it still has four doors and a trunk. I don't worry if I scratch it or load it up with camping gear either.
I too agree that it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy a ridiculously expensive car. There's better ways to spend your money.

To me whats important is that its got a good engine, not too old maybe 6-10 years old, not too much milage. small engine size for insurances purposes and looks ok. I've only just passed my driving test and have a got a little punto. It only cost 600 pound so I hope it last a year or so. Any longer is a bonus. I am not in a position to get a flash car but if I was I hope I would not spend that much money on a car which to me is a nessecity to get to work and I would feel like I was being flash to show off or something.

I put some thought into what I drive before I ever buy a car. I am after a combination of looks and power in a price range I can afford, so because I can not afford a lot of money, it makes the job a bit tough, but I am happy with what I drive because I took the time to figure it out.I have yet to buy a new car, and I am in my Thirties, not because I can't afford one, but if you are choosy and careful you can come up with a lot more car for the money.
There are times and places in life when you can't be as choosy, perhaps someone's first car for example, but when you get a bit older like me, then you can usually be more picky.
So, yes it is important to me.

My aim is a comfortable car that is perfectly dependable and roomy enough. That ends to be a middle of the line car not the fanciest.
I once worked with a guy who had a car whose name he was always dropping in the conversations, like "I think that I will move my Lexus at lunch hour so it doesn't get scratched in the parking lot." He clearly cared more about brand name than the rest of us who barely knew that "Lexus=great." Knowing what his pay was, we tended to see him as someone who was overspending on image.
I also know a friend of the family who has no shortage of money and he bought a Maybach, so expensive that he was written up in the local newpaper as having an unusual car. To me that proves that if you are not a multimillionaire trying to compete on image with people who can afford fancy cars you are likely to lose that battle. So why bother to try for the top image - there are always people who can easily top you.

I have a newer SUV. A little expensive...but an SUV was important because we have two kids and need to be able to bring home groceries. (I don't like mini vans)...because it is newer my husband parks it a million miles away so carts don't hit it and scratches don't' happen. We spend more money waxing and washing....and getting it maintained then I think the payments are (that is an exaggeration) but we take great care of it. So I guess for me it's both. I wont drive a mini van...because of the stigma...but it still has to be functional for daily use.

I drive a nice car mainly because I really like to drive. If the weather is nice on a weekend I'll just go for a drive sometimes. I used to drive a really basic car (Geo Prizm), and the new car makes it about 100 times more fun.

I am with you if it gets me from point A to point B and back it is a great car. I know people like you talk about that have nice cars and worry about them all the time. Heck if someone stole my car they probably need it more than I do because it isn't much.

A car is a car. As long as it is clean, runs well and gets good mileage I'm OK with it. I'd rather spend my money on my home and children rather than have a status symbol parked out front.

It's not that important to me just so I can depend on it to get me to work and home from shopping... although I think next time I'll try a domestic vehicle. Foreign cars tend to cost a little more to a LOT more in replacement parts.
Have a great day!!!

Well, here in Europe is easy to buy a car. Thefore, you can buy exactly the car you like. Therefore, many people have very-expensive-wonderful cars! But other people like cheap cars. And they have a cheap car. And that's OK with with everybody. What is important, is that your car must function perfectly!
