If an economy such as the US's is bolstered by war what is the motivation for peace? I was just thinking about all of the businesses who profit from war - not just the obvious ones like Haliburton - but others like all of those businesses who contract with the military to provide k-rations or uniforms or security gear etc.

Steel, oil, current DoD contractors. Less obvious are food producers and distributors (MREs, T-Rats, catering), textiles (uniforms, canvas, kevlar), tires, replacement parts for vehicles, mail order catalogs (soldiers shop from afar).

It's probably too late to make a real killing now, but good luck getting in on the ground floor next war!

Defense contractors, obviously. Shipping companies too. In the aftermath of war, building and infrastructure contractors generally do pretty well.
