Unfortunately in my experience you never stop having cravings for tobacco....although they do become less intense. Generally usual advice is to distract yourself until the craving passes, but it does become a bit tedious and at the times when your tired and stressed i have found it particularly difficult to remain strong willed....but the cravings can hit you at anytime. People have told me that even after a couple of years smoke free the urge can suddenly come, but you have to be strong and remember the reasons for stopping in the first place. Its not easy but nothing worthwhile is easy but if your determined you will succeed.

Despite the fact that I used to smoke for Britain (100+ a day, frequently with three on at a time in different rooms!) when I decided to stop I simply said "No more when they've gone" and when they'd gone, I stopped. I didn't get any 'withdrawal' symptoms, and within seven DAYS I'd forgotten I ever smoked and had no desire to do so. Yes, and it's all true, and it was about six years ago now.
Oh, and at the same time - well, about six months later actually, I stopped drinking too by using the same method - and that was from one and a half litres of Scotch every DAY - and again, no withdrawals or other after effects, and I lost all desire to drink too, so you wouldn't want me in your pub, would you !!!

In my experience, the desire comes and goes for three weeks, then gradually you forget about smoking until you get really angry, then the desire to damp down your anger with a cigarette returns. But after three weeks, you just keep telling yourself "I'm a non-smoker" until you believe it. Seeing yourself as a non-smoker is really important. Another tip is to look at smokers in the street and smugly tell yourself that you don't need to smoke any more. I smoked 20 - 30 a day for 40 years and got off them using patches. They don't make the craving go away but they do help you overcome that feeling of giddiness people have when they try to quit without them. Once you defeat the feeling of being deprived of a pleasure that others still enjoy, you are out of it. After all, it really is a stupid habit and just one cigarette will have you back on them, so stay smoke-free.

Good luck

u dont lose the taste for smoking its disgusting but it takes 3 weeks for the pangs (the urge to smoke)to go away, dont listen to people saying 10 years these people have quit on the will power method these people suffer because they feel like they are making a sacrifice ,if you make a vow to your self you are never gonna smoke again you wont smoke if u think how long can i last then u are just punishing yourself and will prob start again remember your not actually giving anything up ,and also smoking casues stress doesnt releive it.if your giving up not sure your question meant you are good luck.

I stopped for a few years, then went through personal trauma and started again, then stopped, had another personal trauma and then decided to just keep smoking as I figured giving up smoking had a negative impact on my life.

It all depends I have quit now for 3 years and I could probably light up a cigarette at anytime other than I know how bad I smell after doing it. One thing is for sure you will get taste buds you never had before.
