In my 9yr old son's English text book it is given as 1440 & in his Hindi text book it is given as 1398 so this is his question as a fact of history which is true? Also this leads us to his death year which is correctly given as 1518 in both his books, hence the question arose as to did he live for 120yrs or 80yrs.Can Indians nowadays also live upto 120 yrs?One cannot satisfy growing children with vague answers & kill their curiosity to learn.

There are various conjectures about the actual birth date of Kabirdas ji. The reason for this may be the fact that during those time no one had any reason to keep any record of exact dates and times because no one would have known how great Kabirdas Ji would become and the reason for it. It is only recently after all the idiosyncrasies between Hindus and Muslims started , that his true mettle has come to light.
Essentially it has to be considered that he was born and lived sometimes in the 14th century. Both the following dates point to this aspect. It does not seem to go beyond these dates.
Kabirdas (1399-1518) - Kabirdas was a great saint poet of Varanasi who preached the oneness of God and humanity as well as Hindu-Muslim unity. A disciple of Swami Ramananda, Kabir is regarded as one of the pioneers of Hindi literature. He wrote a number of devotional verses, which were compiled into 'Kabir Granthavali'. His works were later translated into Bengali and English. A number of his verses are recorded in Guru Granth Sahib.
Kabirdas (1440 - 1518): Kabir lived in the 15th century. He was a medieval muslim mystic, who is well remembered even today for his simple life and extraordinary devotional fervor. He lived in Benares, the famous Hindu pilgrim center and led a very simple life as an ordinary weaver. Born to Mohammadan parents, he came under the influence of the famous Hindu saint, Sri Ramananda and delved deep into the mysteries of Hindu mysticism. Not much is known about his birth and early childhood. But according to popular legends, he was a Muslim by birth but went beyond the religious bigotry of his times . A true worshipper of God, he emphasized the purity of mind and selfless devotion to God. He openly opposed the weaknesses of both Hinduism and Islam. The following verse amply illustrates his fearless assessment of these two religions.

You are right -
There are a few contradictary versions about Sant Karbirdas's Birth and death. I have taken references from a few books and various web sites and I fee his lived during 1398 - 1518 only thus living for 120 years. Now a days perople may not live for such no. of years (Though we have recently heard a lady living in Bihar for 121 years considered oldest lady) but in 14th Century or so it was quite possible especially for a Mahan like Sant Kabirdas. so let us take this period as he lived.
(1398 - 1518) Many legends abound about the birth, life and death of Kabir, one of India's most quoted poets and mystics. His birth itself is shrouded in mystery, some say he was the son of a Brahman widow, others that he was of virgin birth, what is known though is that he was brought up in a family of muslim weavers. Legend has it that he was actually the son of a Brahmin widow who abandoned him and that he was found by a Muslim weaver named Niru, who adopted the boy and taught him the weaver's trade.
He was never formally educated and was almost completely illiterate. According to legend, the only word that he ever learned how to write was "Rama".
Legend says that he reliquished his body when he was about 120 years old. There is a famous legend about his death; When he died, his Hindu and Muslim followers started fighting about the last rites. When they lifted the cloth covering his body, they found flowers instead. The Muslim followers buried their half and the Hindu cremated thier half. In Maghar, his tomb and samadhi still stand side by side.

To regain my Top Contributor badge. LOL OK on a more serious note. I am at an age were many of my goals have already been achieved or it is too late to try to achieve them. I would like to travel outside of the USA a little. I have seen most of my country except the Northwest and Alaska. I want to go to Australia, Ireland (to see you of course) and maybe a few other places in Europe. In these hard times I don't think I will ever be able to retire. I will have to work until I die or I my health gets so bad they put me in a nursing home. That's OK though because most of the people I have known that retired died within a few years anyway because they didn't stay active.

Saint Kabir Das (kabir, Arabic for "great", dasa, Sanskrit for "slave" or "servant"), is widely acknowledged as one of the great personality of the Bhakti movement in North India. He was as is widely acknowledged born in Year 1398 A.D.(71 years before Guru Nanak). Kabirpanthis (followers of Kabir) say that he lived upto the age of 120 years and give date of his death as 1518, but relying on the research of Hazari Prased Trivedi, a British Scholar Charlotte Vaudenville is inclined to lend credence to these dates and has prooven that 1448 is probably the correct date of Saint Kabir's demise.

we-ell.....to finish at least one project...just ONE thing. I've given up on the babies matinee jackets I meant to knit and also the quiche cooking that I meant to learn. It's open house for everyone to come around and sample my perfect crepes in a few years time (hopefully) if they can wait that long. Meanwhile they're welcome to come and have some grilled cheese on toast.
