I have just noticed that while Ellen and Rosie O'Donnell are major stars the most visable gay actors are still only supporting actors. Why?

When you are hosting the Oscars, you are a major star. I am saying there are no gays on the same level.

Ellen and Rosie were pretty popular before coming out from what I can recall. I think that females come out more often than males do when it comes to Hollywood. I am sure there are major gay male celebrities who just haven't came out.

well it's because women are seen as less threatening. I mean, we still do live in a heterosexist, male dominated society. We're supposed to be seeing men run this country, men are supposed to be out there cut throat and running things, not taking a lot of roles that women do. Women are seen as the loving part of a relationship, the weaker end of the deal, and when there are couples there have to be a weaker end which is why we always see a butch women with a femme and what many heterosexual people think of when they think lesbian couples. There have to be heterosexual, binary couples in everything and they can't accept the fact that in relationships there may be an equal, and a white male may be the weak link. Someone like them CAN NOT be the weak link. It happens and it really scares the pants off these guys.

I think its 50/50. I mean your more likely to see gay men cast on reality shows or primetime shows like Will & Grace, Big Brother, Real World, Amazing Race, Survivor, and even Dawson's Creek before you see a lesbian. And you see a rainbow of gay men on tv not just the more masculine but the more feminine as well. But with women you see Rosie and Ellen but they're more adrogenous than femme or butch. So maybe Rosie and Ellen get a show but E! has plenty of gay men hosting there networks.

The feminine gay males seemed to be accepted mroe and more because they are the only types you'll ever see on tv. You'llnever see a masculine gay man take center stage in main stream media because that would be too intimidating. Having flaming queens in the media is safe. What a way to stick to the flaming gay sterotype!!

I believe in simple answers so here goes,the reason is because more people are accepting of lesbians than gay men. Women seem to be as a rule more accepting of all people living their lives as they see fit so both get more votes from women,then their are alot of men for whom lesbianism is not a problem for various reasons who at the same time are bothered by the concept of gay men. Add them up and the lesbian gets more acceptance and therefore more airtime.

Well here in the UK it seems to be the other way round. I think gay men are much more accepted within society, but i have a feeling that has a lot to do with our love of all things camp.

I can see the point you are trying to illustrate, but lesbians are not really that mainstream on telly yet. not as much as they should be. Anyway, just keep working at making them mainstream: watch movies shown at independent cinemas (they tend to be more expensive, but they give the small guys a break); buy magazines etc. I dont htink you have to worry much though. I heard on the radio, that "gay is the next black". (Its in fashion)

I think it's cultural and psychological.
The female body is more aesthetic than the male body thus, the images of females cuddling together are always thought of as hot while men cuddling are thought of as weak or girlish, more females that are homosexual have been brave enough to admit it in tv than men, however there are gay men like Sir Elton John that have fame on their own.

Because some sick and perverted men like to see two women together. But do not like to see two men together in that manner. The world accepts lesbians more than gay men. That is what the world likes to see.

Its all about the quality of the pornography. Straight, gay, les, male or female, it doesnt matter. No one wants to see two dudes with beards kissing all over each other. But lesbo porn now, thats where the money is.
