Step 1: Create a Shortcut

Go to your desktop, right-click, and then in the shortcut menu, select New->Shortcut.

You will see a dialog box titled "Create Shortcut". In the text field that asks you for the location, type this in:

shutdown -t 00

This command tells WindowsXP to shut down your PC. The -t switch specifies how many seconds to wait until shutting down. In our example, we used 00, because we want it instant (like my food and entertainment, dammit).

Click Next. Now you will have a chance to re-name your shortcut.

In our example, I called it Quick Shutdown.

Click Finish. Great! Now we have an icon that allows us to shut down our WinXP machines in a single click!

Click the link below to learn how to customize your button:

Use a power strip and either disconnect the plug from the wall or shut off the power switch. Note: Your computer will log this as a power failure.

To shutdown remotely your machine. Create a file called "RemoteShutdown.js" consisting of the following single line:

(new ActiveXObject("Shell.Application")).ShutdownWindows();
Save it on your desktop or anywhere else convenient. When you want to shut down your machine remotely, double-click the file and select your desired shutdown option.
