I just bought a dehunidifier for my basement because it was recently finished and seemed to have dampness in the air. I started it up yesterday and it collected a lot of water, but the temperature in the room went up 4 degrees and it was getting pretty warm (80 degrees!). I had it set to 45% humidity but then I increased it to 55% when it started getting warm. Is this normal? Does the water in the air make the room cooler? I had a dehumidifier in the basement when I was growing up and don't remember this happening. Thanks!

I know that typically humidity will cause the room to be warmer, but this is the opposite. The dehumidifier is taking moisture out of the air and that is causing the room to warm up.

Because the fan motor produces heat and the compressor produces heat both put this heat into the room just as a light bulb makes heat and the bulb puts heat into the room also

Some earlier answers were right. Heat from the motor and compressor. However the higher the humidity the warmer it will feel so don't turn the humidistat up to 55. You will feel warmer at 80 degrees and 55% humidity than you will at 45%. So keep it at 45% or even 40.

The less water in the air makes moisture on your skin evaporate more quickly which cools your skin. I keep mine set at 40 and it is slightly warmer but the air feels very good and fresh--the mustiness is all gone.

Also you want to try to keep the humidity at 40-45 especially is anyone in your family has allergies to molds of any kind. They thrive and produce millions of symptom-causing spores when the humidity is too high.
