Can you explain on a conceptual level what does the bass add an ensamble of musical insturments (i.e. what would be lacking if it wasn't there and what is added when it is)? What is the musical difference between a regular bass and a fretless one?

Bass is really like the 2nd Guitar, like 1st and 2nd violins groups. Listen to some Primus and u you can see what a bass can do.

On a primal, that is, pre-conceptual level, the bass appeals immediately & completely to human (and pre-human) heart - to the animal portion of us it echoes the distant thunder and the low wind through the trees, and for the modern human portion, it echoes the open freeway, the guns of war and the factory floor - and it fills in the frequency space abandoned by the more conceptual instruments of melody, while still complementing and counterpointing the melody itself - what music without bass would lack is solidity - a sense of the grounding reality in which music is made - listen to old jazz or blues recordings from the 1930's, and see if they don't feel somehow less real to you; the songs may be great, but there's something missing . . .in more conceptual terms, the higher-frequency melody instruments are like conversation exchanging ideas, while the bass provides the world in which the conversation takes place

The bass is an octive lower than the guitar. With a bass, it makes a fuller sound and there is some chance of having some harmonys.

WELL THE BASS IS ALL ABOUT RHYTHM USUALLY. THE BASSIST AND THE DRUMMER ARE LIKE BROTHERS. WITHOUT A BASS THE MUSIC SOUNDS MUCH EMPTIER.
