how can an animal be heterothermic when it is already an ectotherm?

Ectothermic as in the majority of body heat derived from
environment.
Homeothermic would be body temperature held constant across
range of environmental temperatures.
Heterothermic would be body temperature not consistently maintained.

Heterothermic animals are usually classified as a subgroup of endothermic, not ectothermic. I know of no examples of a ectothermic heterotherm. See the reference below:
