I have been temping with a company for 6 months. I had hoped to be hired on but it didn't look promising because of no open positions in my field. I recently applied to another company - a VERY good one and got an interview. I am waiting to hear back from them. However, on Friday the company I am temping for - also a good one but it has no room for advancement in my field beyond what I would get hired into - offered me a job. I am in negotiations with them right now and they will probably want an answer from me on Monday. But I haven't heard back from this other company yet - and I think I have a shot but really who knows. Would it be wrong for me to accept the position at my current company and then quit if the other company offers me the job I REALLY want? I like both places but the other company is better for my field, though I feel a loyalty to where I am now and don't want to make them mad but I really need to look out for myself. Please help!

Other detials: It is the company I am working at I feel loyalty to - not the temp company - just to be clear. My main question here is would it be horrible of me to accept the one job offer and continue to interview for the other job and go ahead and take it if it is offered? Seems like a crap thing to do but is that a normal thing to do?

Well they gave me the second offer today - it was higher but not spectacular. Still I'd rather do the other job. I agree I should probably look out for myself. I did already call the other company on Friday to see where how my candidacy stacked up because I have another job offer on the table. I figure they know whether or not they are considering me or not at this point. I am probably going to hold my current company off as long as possible since they didn't give me a deadline (though that woman is going to be calling tomorrow I can almost guarantee). If I haven't heard from the other place by Thursday I'll take it. Still - if the other place calls and gives me another interview and hopefully the job - I'll take that too.

There is absolutely no reason for you to NOT take the job offer, so long as is is a good offer, and you're happy with it. Should the other company come along with an offer, which is BETTER, then you can easily quit and move on.
A lot of people think this is bad, but in thelong run, you're not living your life for the company, you're living it for yourself. You MUST go where the wage is better or advancement is better or whatever you THINK is better because it is BETTER FOR YOU.
The two scenarious come about like this, both predicated on your accepting the offer at your current company.
A) The company you're waiting on offers you a job at a comperable or higher salary. Since this job has advancement possibilities, you accept, giving them the information that you need to give your current employer notice. (2 Weeks is standard.) You quit your current job, offering 2 weeks. (Chances are that they will allow you to leave, no 2 week severance due to the short amount of time you have been with the company.) This is also fine as you have a job waiting. Your new job will either have you start in 2 weeks, or allow you to start immediately as you are free to make the move.
B) The other company does NOT come through with an offer. You are safe in the fact that you have a permanent job, not a temp job with a company where you do enjoy working. YOu can still look and interview with other companies as they come up.
Win Win situation.

i think that you should accept the job at the company where you have been a temp at for 6 months and wait untill you get an answer from the company you really want to go to. why? because it offers you a better opportunity to grow, right? and at the company you are with righ now does not. plus the company you are with does not give you any more advancement, but is giving you a job in the meanwhile. Well I'm not sure on how to speak about the company you are with and the one you want to go to. One thing for sure: think about your future and do what is best to reach all the the goals you have in mind. :-)

Tough decision. But...
You need to focus on the now, not the future of any potential career advancement. For me, the people are the most important and the job experience. If you pick one company (with the offer) then go with it. If you get an offer from the other company afterwards, you can possibly go to them and show them the offer to see if they would match.
A sure thing is always better than a maybe, in my book

you always have to look out for yourself. As good as you think your company or managers or owners are to you, they will always take care of the company first. It's good to 'feel' loyal, but you need to do what is best for you and your career.
Give the other place a call and see if they have made a decision. Put your current company off and tell them you still need a little more time to 'think', compare what ever to buy some time. Just ask them straight out, can I have until Wed. to decide? I am still weighing some options.

You've restricted yourself to a lousy 200 words & a couple of options. As a career move, your question here seems more bogus than reality. The offers of your tenative employers will result in your desision. Meanwhile, take the rest of the day off & think it over!

Not wrong to leave, as long as you give your current employer the required notice. Unless you have an employment contract, then you have to abide by it. It's an employer, not a friend.
