Could this go back to witch trials, further than witch trials,
Are women hated and gossiped about who are single, are left alone, widowed or abandoned by a man, or who get divorced and are left vulnerable?
I know of at least three cases off the top of my head where a woman who was widowed and left alone with five children was detested by her neighbors, another woman who was abused by her spouse, got divorced and was left with two children was gossiped about and hated by neighbors, and another woman who got a divorce was left with two children was gossiped about and persecuted and picked on, no one feeling any sympathy that she had to take care of a house and kids alone.

Is it natural for society to pick on a woman who doesn't have a male to defend her, especially if she's vulnerable with children?

It's not being a "single woman;" but rather a "single mom." There's a difference. The latter most often represents another divorce-on-demand, broken home story... a woman who dishonored the vows she took. And her children now don't have a dad and are running around out of control.

I'm not saying that there can't be a valid reason for a divorce, but the only valid reason is if your husband is unfaithful, and even here she made a bad choice in marrying him.

People don't have contempt for ordinary "single women." You're really referring to divorced women.

In society a woman is supposed to have a man, period. If a woman does not have a boyfriend, husband, whatever, then people think that something must be wrong with her.

I don't know if society picks on a woman who was left a widow. (I would agree with divorce- what did the woman do to make a man leave her? Or never getting married - what hasn't a man ever wanted her?) But a widow had her husband die, which I don't know why anyone would be resentful towards her for that reason. Maybe for not remarrying so she would have a husband to take care of her and her children again.

Having a man validates a woman in our society.

And of course, I don't agree with any of the statements I've just made!

Yes. Being single, I am always asked "Who are you dating now?", as if I should run right out and get another man! Why can't a woman be alone? And why do people assume a woman is gay if she doesn't have or hasn't had a boyfriend in a while!? I enjoy being alone now and I don't have a need to run out and find a man. People don't seem to understand!

I think society has a bias against them because of past beliefs about the capability of a woman to succeed without a man. However I believe this prejudice will slowly fade as men especially the younger generation come to regard women as equals.

I think some people are just jealous, take a woman who is married to some one who is a jerk or does not work or maybe just plain mean,I would rather be single than live with a jerk. And my heart goes out to those who have lost a spouse and are left behind with children.People who hate single woman must have something wrong them,or they are very unhappy with their lives.

I love single women! I think, at least in my world, that a single woman is doted over and many people have empathy for her. Unless she's wicked and evil... in which case, only "most" people are on her side.

In most of the situations I've encountered, it's been the other way around. The women have been sympathized with to the point of almost pitied, while the guys have been vilified.

I don't think its an innate hate against single women, its against all women. Everyone, men and women, are threatened by other women, I think. Men, because they fear the biological power that is woman, and women, because of jealousy. Married women probably don't get as much because the man is there to block the criticism.

I think you are freaking-out about your situation or you have a few real or percieved enemies who are trying to get the best of you--don't let them.
