I was just curious... for those of you who are further along - When watching your belly & the baby move have any of you ever noticed the baby "practice breathing" ?? I sometimes watch my belly & can see a rhythmic pulse right around where his mid-section would be & I'm wondering if it is him practicing his breathing. I know they say they do that - but have any of you 'seen it'??? Just curious!

I know what the hiccups feel/look like & I have checked my own pulse while this is happening ... not the same.

Amniotic fluid also helps your baby develop his lungs. While in the womb your baby practices breathing by breathing in and out the water in the amniotic sac. The baby swallows and inhales the amniotic fluid and replaces the volume in the amniotic sac by urinating and exhaling the liquid.

For those of you that are RLMFAO-ing.. I'm really not an idiot. This is my 3rd pregnancy & my baby has had the hiccups at least 3 times a day for the past several months - so I definitely know what those are! Thanks

I don't think you could see the baby "practice breathing" (they do draw in amniotic fluid and "exhale" it as well). What you might be seeing is your baby having the hiccups! Our daughter had them all the time when she was in the womb (and now that she's here, she still gets them all the time!). We could see and feel her movements when she would hiccup.
Enjoy!

Babies don't take their first breath of air until the cord begins to die, or if you clamp it, they're forced to get on with the breathing right away. But they don't do it before that because the heart and lung system isn't fully functional until the cord begins to die, causing the baby's own circulation and respirpation to make the final development, and take over those jobs.
You're probably seeing your own heartbeat, baby hiccups, or anything else... babies do some really odd things in there, sometimes!

I have had 4 babies and can't remember any time when it appeared my babies were practicing breathing. As I got further along in my pregnancy, I could sometimes identify perhaps a little elbow, knee, or foot pushing against my stomach or under my ribs. They all had hiccups, especially my youngest - she hiccuped several times each day.

You are witnessing your own heartbeat. The baby is practicing but you can't see it . There is water, an amniotic sac, and a few layers of you to go through. Unless you have xray vision I don't think you can actually see it.

I'm 40 weeks today and i think what your experiencing is the baby with hiccups. I have felt them from about 25 weeeks and they normally last between 5-10 mins. Hope this helps. Good luck.

You are not going to actually see the baby breathing. Yes they do take breaths, but you won't see it. It is most likley hiccups. Like adults the hiccups may vary in frequency, so they may feel slightly different.

I'd swear that my daughter had hiccups for about the last 7 weeks of my pregnancy...other people would notice my belly "jumping". She had hiccups often just after she was born too :-p

I don't think you are seeing your baby breathing. I think you are seeing your own heart beat. You have an artery and a vein that run down the middle of your stomach. Depending on how far along you are, you could be seeing him hiccup :)

your baby makes lots of movement changes during the pregnancy, but im afraid breathing is not one of them, you are more likely to be seeing the protective fluid swishing around as he makes a move to get comfortable, however it dont matter, what does matter is that he is doing great and so are you, you enjoy every minute of this special time and have many happy years in the future with your son..
