u talkin bout yahoo messenger? could be in your yahoo settings. cuz you can turn the buzz sound off or on. depending on how you like it. probably has nothing to do with yer puter, just settings

In yahoo messenger, open messenger;-click messenger(top left);-click preferences;-click alerts and sounds from list;-check enable alert sounds box;-choose option from list;-check playing a sound box;-choose desired alert sound by clicking browse button.
After making choice, click open(look for the name of the chosen sound in File name box);-click apply. You can hear the sound you have chosen by clicking the arrow in front of the browse button. If your sound system is working in other applications, this might fix it in Yahoo messenger. This is for incoming only.
For out going, follow first 3 steps but check Calling and audio instead of Alert sounds.

if using yahoo or msn whichever you are using, make sure the volume is turned on in these messengers.
