I have been to several plays and have noticed the reaction when a Jamaican character is depicted in the play, audiences love it! But when a jamaica play is out, only caribbean people go to see them.

I think that some people from outside of the caribbean have difficulty understanding some island dialects and patois and find it harder to follow the dialogue. They might allow that to keep them away from some good theatre! I've noticed the same thing with Barbadian plays. Some playwrights have gone so far as to provide a glossary or guide to make things more accessible to audiences. My pet peeve is when an actor uses an inappropriate accent for the island or region that he or she is supposed to be representing! Accents and dialects aren't interchangeable, and there needs to be some education around that.
