Yes it is religious one. to avoid negative things or to prevent it.
Normally they kept at the God's Feet and as per our religious thoughts, the chanting of the God's names of 108,1008 will be absorbed in the tag which will help us to get ride of negative things like ghost, bad dreams. Scientifically speaking it creates self confidence of the person who is wearing in the waist. Most of the tags are chanted tags of Hanuman (braveness God).
Each & Every customs of Hindus, I can prove scientifically how it elevates Human to attain the enlightment of God .

It is not a belt it's a kind of string.Tied around waist for religious purpose. It has nothing to do with holding trouser/pyjama . It's very rare and only young kids are tied with black string.

its a kind of thin rope... rather a string... it has some medical benefits though it is thought of a religious one... the thin rope is kind of a pressure point on the male genital and the posture... it helps the male body to develop properly and the production of other harmones... it is purely for scientific purpose which is being followed fromt the olden ages... IT IS NOT ONLY FOLLOWED BY HINDUS BUT BY MOST OF THE RELIGIONS SITUATED IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF INDIA...

basically it has scientific reason. when points around the waist is stimulated, its good for some hormone secretion and spinal cord. but our ancestors started doing it in the name of religion, hoping their generation would follow it without fail, when religion is kept in front!!
