well locking up is due to useage from the CPU and the RAM. You need to have ample RAM for a PC. I would reccomend having at LEAST 1GB of RAM. Ive been working with computers and i know that if you want something confortable to work with go with a 1GB. Now, you have to ask yourself, how many programs are you using? how much stuff comes up on start up? You can change the stuff that comes up on start up simply by going to start, RUN and type "msconfig" (w/o quotations) and go to start up tab. Uncheck everything. When it asks to restart and save, click yes. Your comp should restart, rather quickly. When it reboots to windows, you will get a popup stating something just click yes. Now, if your computer still hangs, please contact me, Midnight3_Love4@yahoo.com just state your Yahoo ID and "computer problems" in the subject and I'll be more that willing to help you. Thanks for asking! have a good day

Well this problem is common and very hard to diagnose unless you have a post card. It is usually a hardware issue. I am not sure of the hardware you have in the system but it sounds like you are doing what someone woudl need to do to diagnose it, namely changeing out parts one at a time until you figure out which was causing it. Since you have changed out the RAM, Video card etc, it may be an issue with the systems motherboard, BIOS or the CPU itself. I would probably suggest considering a replacement for the CPU and Motherboard. You could also try upgradeing the system's BIOS chipset. Your manufacturer can help you with this. I generally dislike Intel CPUs, they run hotter, cost more and usually are not as fast as an equivalent AMD chip, but it is a pesonal preference thing... Oh did you try removing the sound card? Also you might want to pick up a thermal sensor display so you can keep tabs on system temps. You can find them on ebay or at www.xoxide.com They fit in a standard 5.25" drive bay and have small sensors which you place in the machine to tell the temps for hard drives, CPU and general system temps. Oh yes, if you post your full system specs, I may be able to help more. This can also be caused by a bad hard drive or one about to go bad, so if you have access to another one, try a swap out.

There are many problems which this could be. To me, it sounds like you probably have a driver that is messing with everything.

Try loading up Windows XP in Safe Mode (reboot, hit F8 when screen comes up, then select Safe Mode) and see if it hangs when you are using it. If it doesn't, most likely something is loading up that is causing XP to hang.

If it still hangs in Safe Mode, you might have faulty hardware.

Also, if it's working at the repair shop and not at your home, then your power (electricity) has a problem. Your home probably has a lot of power spikes or surges. Invest in a surge protector or a UPS device.

I know you don't want an 'I don't know'... but the question can't be answered without a few more details - Is there a common denominator such as freezing when a screen saver comes up or when a java program starts? Have you changed your BIOS settings? (if so, go back to the defaults). What percentage is your CPU normally running at? Any resource conflicts? Your symptoms point to multiple possible problems.

Many people who have aol are having problems from time to time....the first thing you want to do is call you service provider and let them know about the situation. You may need to go to the following...click onto the icon down by the clock and when the menu comes up, hit systems information...then on the box that says warning and click OK...go to aol on the left hand side-top of the second menu...in the little tab to the bottom right of that menu, click onto systems restore...wait a few and then restart your comp...it should work...or...

If that doesn't work, you may have a clogged system that needs to be cleaned out...delete unnecessary icons on your screen....

But, definitely call your service provider and let them know...There may be a problem at their end...and ask them about the weather icon if you one on your desktop. That weather icon may need to be deleted.
