Most people use shaving cream or gel because it has moisturizers in it. Soap can dry your skin, and it doesn't have the thickness when lathered to help protect your skin against the blades. Even if you never get nicks and cuts, the blades can scrape your skin too much, adding to razor burn. The thickness of creams and gels help to protect against that.

The old-fashioned shaving soap was just a soap in the bottom of a cup that you whipped into lather with a brush...my dad used it all the time. Maybe it was a specially frothy one; but I'm sure you could get the same results with today's shower gels.
The pressurized shaving creams are just faster to use than having to lather your own, and of course, you don't have to have a brush; more portable I guess.
Go ahead and try bath gel and I bet it will be just as good if not better. It's what we ladies use when we shave! And you can pick your own scent that way.

Shaving cream has more vitamins and minerals in it for your skin during shaving than just using plain soap. Try shaving once with soap and see how you do, then do shaving cream and see which facial surface you prefer.

Why shaving cream instead of soap? The same reason we use any commercial product. Because the manufacturers of shaving cream, in their never ending quest for $$$, has convinced the public through clever advertising, that they NEED it.

Ive tried out both and know the difference.
Sopa doesnt produce that lather as cream, I mean u need to use more soap, also the process becomes easy with cream.
As somebody said, its dry, unlike suing cream which now come with moisturiser, afterall, u need a smooth shave.
I also used Gel, which, although costly, gives a smooth effect and comfortable shave, even leaves ur skin feeling smoother.
Its more of convinience I would say, something like why we use a plastic bottle instead of glass bottle for carrying water. (some vague example)

I do use soap....but you definetly have to use a moisturizer if you use soap. Shaving cream is like any other product....there for us to spend money on it. Its the shaving companies job to make you think that you can't live without it...that and four bladed razors!

shaving creams come with moisturizers and nutrients in them. It cut's down on those nasty red spots. Also you get a thicker lather from shaving cream than soap. It is designed to protect your skin and leave it soft and healthy. (Trust me your girlfriend knows the difference.

It works also. Shaving cream is thicker, but I use soap when I run out.
