i have a 93 pontiac bonneville that was running fine yesterday and today won't start. i replaced the battery which also rules out the alternater. the starter is only 2 years old max on the car. when i turn the key, it makes a normal starting noise for about half a second and then nothing. it doesn't even make it far enough for the starter to click or anything else that would keep it from turning over. what could go bad in less than 12 hours to make a normal running car suddenly not come close to being able to start..........and yes there's gas in it, bout 3/4ths of a tank.

it sounds like a loose ground wire on it,,i own a repair shop,,and see them do this before,,just check all the connections on it,,and, look at the wire that goes to the starter real good,it may be loose on it,the only other thing that will do this is a solenoid switch,,and you said the starter was 2 yrs old,,it could actually have a bad solenoid on it,,i have seen them go bad in less than a week,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.

No, replacing the battery doesn't rule out the alternator. Start by checking all the electrical connections, battery cable tight? Good. Jack up the front of the car, put jack stands in place. Slide under. Find the starter. Wire(s) to it good and tight and in place? Good. Now grab it and give it a shake. If it's loose, that is probably your problem, tighten up the bolts (usually three of them) that hold it in place. Now try.

If that wasn't it, climb out. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Now climb back under and take the wires off the starter, then remove the bolts. Take it to the auto parts store with you, get it checked. Buy a new one when it fails.

How old is the battery??? Sometimes even a battery that isn't very old can be damaged inside and cause a faulty battery, I have had it happen before. Does the engine turn over?? I had a car that wouldn't even turn over and this happened overnight, I found out my ignition switch had a geared stem that went to something else after the key hole. The stem had broke and it wasn't closing the switch to start the engine.

Check that the cables are clean and tight. Even a little corrosion can ruin your connection. Clean up where cables connect to the starter solenoid.

If you get the same results, jump the starter solenoid.

Replacing the battery doesn't rule out a fried alternator. Some garages (depends where you live) do a free electrical test, given that you make it to a garage or have yourself towed there ....Good luck
