He got tired of being in Goku's shadow and decided if you can't beat him, join him. When Goku went super on Namek fighting Frieza, Vegeta lost it. He decided his best chance to rise above Goku was to train with him untill he went super, unfortunately for him when he went super saiyan fighting 17 and 18, and Cell, Goku ascended and topped him yet again. Eventually when fighting Super Buu he acknowledged that no matter what he did, Goku would always one up him, and made his peace. Only time Vegeta bests Goku is when he goes super ape in GT. That was awesome, a supercharged King Kong. He beat the tar out of everyone there. Noone could stop him, they had to take out the moon to stop him. I loved that episode. Vegeta reached super saiyan 4 before Goku( with a little help from Bulma).

Most of this actually happens off screen... during this time he developed a love/ hate relationship with Bulma... That and deep down i think he wanted what Goku had... A reason to fight that was more important then just being stronger. (In later episodes when Vegeta goes bad again, he explains that he was jealous of how Goku had everything: friends, family, ect...)

Vegeta found a family of his own and actually learned to love them: Bulma, his wife, his son Trunkx, and his daughter, hmm...forgot her name.
Anyways, not only did he found love and acceptance but he also learned to humble himself!!! The proud prince of sayans eventually teamed up with Goku with the fusion technique to save earth from the destructible Majinbu.
See? Everyone has his second chances.

He meets Bulma and slowly starts to like her more more so that he wants to stay on earth. Although he doesn't want to stay there he loves Bulma and decides to stay on Earth with her. He never really turns peaceful he just gets more tamed by Bulma's attituide.
