This all depends where you live. In the UK, there is actually no specific law or date overall.
Most UK banks put in their terms and conditions for having an account that if you give someone a cheque from your account, your bank do not have to pay it if it is over 6 months old. In some situations, they still might.
That means they don't guarantee they will pay it, but they also don't guarantee they won't. It also depends on the value of the cheque - some cheque processing centres don't even check for signatures if it's under £400!
Call the bank who issued the cheque and find out their policy. They may still pay it, or they may instantly say "we would never pay a cheque that old".
Failing that, contact whoever sent you the cheque. If you return that cheque to them, they might be happy to send you another.
Hope it helps,
froggie

It depends on the check... I know you said personal but some personal checks are only good for 30 days and some can be good up to a year... check with your bank... If it's no good contact the person who gave you the check and see if they'll give you a new one...

DEFINITELY -- this is an Expired Financial Instrument. Anything over 6 months old is NOT going to be deposited or cashed for you by ANY Financial Institution.

I think six months from the date of the cheque is the latest.
