Yes, the country is still safe, though I believe that because of OUR war in Iraq, we have made ourselves more vulnerable to more terrorist determination than we ever were before. By "terrorist determination", I mean that I believe we can prevent an actual event, but we have to try all that much harder now because more terrorists now are more resolved than ever to do something to us. That is my great concern.

Whatever "safe" means, we have always had crime in our country, as others here have observed. If we want to lock ourselves up in jail cells every night, we can ensure ourselves of our own safety - and if we want to trade in our freedoms as Americans for wiretaps and silicon chips to track us, we can also be similarly safe.

But that's not MY America - in fact, it wouldn't be America for anyone at all.

We need to return to exporting hope instead of paranoia and fear.

It really depends on where you live and what kind of life style you have. The biggest danger in the US is from within, not from without. The likelihood of a terrorist causing you harm is infinitely small compared to your chances of being killed in a car crash, or assaulted on the streets of America.
If you live in the suburbs and work days, the chance of being assaulted are slim. If you live in the city, and are out at night the odds go up incredibly.
A soldier in Iraq is safer than a citizen in some areas of some of our major cities. That is statistically a fact, but the media and the Government have it so twisted and distorted that Americans are afraid of things that are unlikely to ever happen to them personally.

I don't feel quite as safe as I did when I was living in Alaska, but that's mainly because I've moved to a part of the country that's a much more obvious target (Washington D.C.)

But I also recognize that the odds of actually being in the wrong place at the wrong time are still about a million to one against, so I don't lose much sleep at night....

I think that it is as safe as any other country on the world. The world we live in now is not as safe as it used to be. Or maybe it is just that with all the media, net and instant communication we dont feel as safe cause we know more of what is going on. It didnt used to seem as real cause you knew about things after it happened.

I don't think it has anything to do with 9/11 but I've never really felt completely safe. Portland's not too bad, I realize that it could be a lot worse... still.

Fact is that many people hate Americans, whatever reason. Safe haven or not, it will become more and more difficult for American tourists to travel the world.

If you are a policemen, politician, mafia member, it is safe for you, not for the common people.
Common people suffer from home espionage, telephone lines intervened, and this place is also monitored by Yankee spies.

I grew up during the cold war with Russian missiles pointed at us every day. The threat these terrorists pose is far, far less. It is even less than our every-day violence and crime, so everything should be kept in perspective.

100% the same America.
Nothing has changed for me, except getting through airport security is much faster now.
(This is not sarcasm or a joke, it has been my experience that the whole airport screening process is much faster, although I'm not sure why that is.)
