I was asking someone the same question the other day. Apparently the dogs understand commands like home and bus and I think they can be taught several other commands like shops and doctors but I think that if they are going somewhere else they have to have a human guide.
Blind people are also amazing at counting steps and remembering obstacles and if you have a dog you will notice that when they have been taken somewhere several times they know where they are going when pointed in the right direction

They implant an tiny micro-chip into the dogs head which translates the owners commands into dog language. At the same time the software from the Tom Tom navigation system is downloaded so it knows all locations. Occasionally, if the software isn't updated the dog gets lost so its given a small electric shock to keep it in the right direction.

If the guide dog had never been there before , he would not know how to get there...He can only direct the owner around traffic dangers etc...

A guide knows how to avoid steps, stairs, traffic, etc. The person would still need some other directions if its somewhere they have never been.

The person must know how to get there. The dog is just there to guide around hazards.

wow this is a great question.....I've never thought of this before but maybe it can only take him to routes it has been taught, regular routes. If he wants to go somewhere out of the ordinary, maybe he needs a human guide?
