First, it is NOT "typewriter".

I know it's an attractive idea, but it isn't correct (and even if you don't accept any longer word, there are OTHER 10-letter words that would tie with it).

Probably the longest verifiable word is the 12- letter "teetertotter" (though it is often spelled with a hyphen)

As for other long ones:
The TEN-letter "typewriter" is, of course, a classic. But there's also: "perpetuity", "proprietor" and "repertoire".

Also, these rarer words have been suggested:
pepperroot, pepperwort, pewterwort, pirouetter, prerequire, pretorture, repetitory, tetterwort

And for LONGER ones-- if you can find them!-- try also:
11 letters: rupturewort (this one IS real!)
12 letters: proterotype, pituitotrope, uropyoureter

(Note -- all these words use the TOP letter-row of the typewriter. Since this row of a typewriter contains the vowels e, i, o, u and y (plus the very common letters t, r and p) it is hardly surprinsg that so many long words, including the longest, use this row.)

Pepperroot, pepperwort, pewterwort, pirouetter, prerequire, pretorture, proprietor, repertoire, repetitory, tetterwort, and typewriter, each ten letters long, are the longest English words that can be typed using only those letters in the top row of a typewriter.

Shakalshas, ten letters long, is the longest English word that can be typed using only those letters in the middle row of a typewriter. Nine letter words with this property include flagfalls, hadassahs, and haggadahs. Eight letter words with this property include alfalfas, galagala, galahads, and haskalah.
