he is only able to jump around like that when he feels the need to defend himself - the "the force" enters his body and allos him to fight. Otherwise he is a week old green little man.

It's called a prop. Some wise guy had the idea Yoda would look good holding a cane and hey presto, Yoda has a cane

He does need one... but when he's going to fight he is supported physically by the Force.
So why did Yoda die? Can he not control the Force enough to prevent his death?
Therefor we can only conclude that if he can not prevent his death he has limitations that manifest with his advanced age.... AND.... since he is vulnerable to these limitations he would need a cane.... AND.... therefor it must be the Force that allows him to move so quickly during battle.

Master Yoda does need it when he is conserving his energy with the force. Wait till you get to be 800 years old and see how easy it is to hold the force within you with great strength.

I don't have any idea, maybe George Lucas got stuck on the "trip" while he was writing Star Wars ("maybe", I don´t really know).

I think he uses it to appear feeble and old before he completley shows who he really is-a Jedi!
