that's funny that you ask this question, Because I asked my room mate the exact same question the other night. I said How is Robert and Bob the same and how can they do that say these names are the same.lol Because clearly their not. I don't know. I don't know the actual origin of the derivative, but the concept dates back to biblical days. Abrham, became Abraham meaning father of many nations. Sari, became Sara meaning princess, Simon BarJonah became Peter meaning rock, Saul became Paul. A name change was given when a person's character was matured. Names were not actually names, they were words that described characters, features, expectations, events, and that's what people were called. For example, Isaac, means laughter. In modern day societies, they are simply nicknames. Hope that helps.

I am just guessing because it rhymes. Someone said it a long time ago hey Bob on accident instead of Rob and it has been passed down.
