Fill the gas tank up with gas and note how many miles are on the odometer.
After a few days, fill the tank back up noting how many gallons it took to fill the tank and the mileage on the odometer.
Divide the miles driven by the number of gallons it took to fill the tank.
I'm not sure how big the fuel tank is on your pickup, but it's surely more than 15 gallons, so multiply your miles per gallon by 15. Add this to the odometer reading when you fill up your gas tank and you know when you have to fill your tank up again.
I actually did this with a Corvair I owned. With a particularly old car, sometimes living with the problem is easier than fixing it.
If you do want to fix it, there's about two different reasons it might not be working.
You have a bad electrical connection. Checking the connections behind the dash can be a pain. You probably have to remove the dash board. The other likely problem is where the electrical wiring comes out of the fuel pump, which should be located on the fuel tank. This might or might not be easily accessible depending on the car's design.
Your float inside the tank is stuck. That's fun. You have to remove the fuel pump to remove the float.
Like I said. Unless it's easy to reach and check the wiring, it's easier to track when you need to fill up by miles per gallon and the odometer than fixing the problem.

Your Mazda B2300 is actually a ford ranger so you know - old cars will have a few problems with their gas gauges - electrical lines rusting, connections loose, or faulty sensor. This is a costly job to fix as it would require the gas tank to be removed - i would not fix it.
