She wants me to help her with her computer which she says isn't working. How do I ask for payment? And how much? I feel like its being greedy to say "Sure I'll come do it for $50" -- What do you guys think.

if she offers you money if you feel put out refuse it ask her to buy you a drink instead. that way she won't feel offended. or if she is a stingy woman or you don't like her take the comp back to your house tell her the hard drive and mainboard is knackered. strip them out and replace them keeping the originals for yourself as spares for a new comp making sure you add on carriage tax on top of the price for the new parts.

Before you do think about what you're doing.

One favour leads to many, believe me I've done it. Many years ago I built a machine for a colleague at cost price, no profit just a favour for colleague. Boy did I regret that! They were phoning me at one in the morning with support questions, when I told them to stop it there were all sorts of issues in the office.

If you don't know how much to charge then you're not someone that does this for a living. You have to include the price of the comebacks in the initial fee especially if it's someone you work with because you're going to be seeing them everyday.

Sorry if that's a bit negative! Just had a bad experience!

im an IT guy at an office and my coworkers are always asking me to do stuff for them. ive told everyone i charge between 50 and 75 an hour for my regular clients, but for them i charge 30 since they are my coworkers. hook them up with a decent price and they may get you some business thats how i look at it.

I'M IN THE SAME SITUATION, THIS IS THE STUNT, YOU RESEARCH THE LOWEST COST TO FIX HER PROBLEM, AND GO 10% LESS THAN THAT AND DEVELOP A PRICE LIST (ALWAYS WORK FOR ME). BECAUSE SHE WILL TRY TO FIND SOMEONE ELSE THEN COME RUNNING BACK TO YOU

Call around to local repair shops and see how much they charge per hour. Then charge her half of that.
