You're going to attract that type of person I'm afraid by the nature of the work. My ideas:

1) Use a recruitment agency? they will typically charge you up to 20% of the person's salary, but this is negotiable and at least it's now their job to sort the suitable from the psychotic ;o)

2) Somehow word the advert so that unsuitable people will be put off. Maybe something like "due to client requirements, we are unable to employ persons with criminal records. All applicants will be thoroughly vetted."

3) Contact your local police station? They may have some leads for you, or advice?

I truly feel for you on this subject matter. I'm from the US and have been in the UK for 3 years now. Two of which i have been working in the security field and man you have some real head cases here. I have also met some security personnel with potential for better things, but the companies they work for don't give a rat's *** about looking after them. Keep looking for your diamonds in the rough. I can recommend a few good ones to you, one of which was ex-army a good lad.

the trouble now ,is that most people see security , as a rag tag bunch of no hopers, or wannabe cops, who demand respect for there limited authority. i have worked in security for years for some good and bad companys ,but poor pay and a lack of respect for employees leaves you with the ones you describe

our company is similar and have been established for 18 years,we have always encountered the same problems like you say most of the applicants are no brain 20 stone yobs who think protecting someone means beating someone up, your best bet is to put in your advertisement's ex-service personnel that way they can bring their service record book with them to interview, you can try to contact the forces careers departments, naffi, or ex service personnel clubs under forces clubs in the phone book.
there is no easy way round this (job centres are not the best option and neither are agencies, good luck.

Why not advertise in unusual places...
So what about Libraries, Churches, CAB, Rspc centres and Im sure you can think of more. The point is that if you advertise in places that are calm you will get calm people.
For example if you advertised in a boxing club you just might get boxers!
Hope you approve

Your advertising for a job that requires aggressive people. Aggressive people are not quiet and acquire a history. You'll just have to look at a lot to find one that's suitable or find one that young with-out the history and train him/her to be what is required.

you are going to have to try advertising with Jobcentre plus. You can give them specifics for people that you will and will not accept; then when people ask about it they will decide whether they are suitable enough to send to you. otherwise, you just have to be polite and tell them to naff off.
