Carbon ('Charcoal') is not really required unless used for a specific purpose (i.e., removing meds). Carbon can also remove dissolved organic solids, water discoloration and odors but it's better to correct the source of the problem rather than treat it. No real need to use carbon continuously.

I used the carbon bag which came with my aquaclear 50 for about 2 or 3 weeks (that's pretty much how long it's effective). Instead of replacing it with more carbon I replaced it with more bio-media.

I don't use charcoal, in any of my tanks. I've read, there was some debate on it, but supposedly the charcoal can leak out the stuff it's absorbing when it's full and cause more problems. Not sure if I buy that or not, but IMO it's not taking care of the problem it's just delaying it. I just use that white filter floss for filters. Just do your water changes and shouldn't be any need for charcoal.

You should rinse the filter out everyweek or so,it has good biological bacteria on it so be sure to use cool water. The bacteria helps keep your water clear and helps thefilter run better.ONly replace the filter if its really dirty or torn. They reccomend every couple months.
