I know that both Meredith Brooks and Alanis Morissette have sung it, but I want to know who wrote it. No guesses, please! I have researched online relatively briefly and with conflicting results. Please let me know if you have the actual album from either one of them and let me know who gets the writing credit.

Hey, why the conflict? :) Please include in your answer whether you have seen credit given in the liner notes. Thanks!

Drofsned, didn't Alanis Morissette do it too, though? I've read it's on an album called "Single." Is that wrong? I downloaded a version by Alanis (supposedly) and was quite sure it was actually Meredith, so I don't know what to think.

Thanks, everybody. My question is almost resolved, but I still don't have a definitive answer for the Alanis question. I've seen that different lyrics sites give her credit for the song, but I went on the site that Di gave and looked for Alanis' version, too, but didn't find it. Anybody know what album hers is on?

And really, thanks so much everybody, you've been extremely helpful, especially now that there are no conflicting answers! :) No worries, Drofsned, just teasing. :)

A 1997 version of the song (the only one I'm familiar with - "I'm a b***h, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother...") was by Meredith Brooks. The writing credit is to Brooks and an S. Peiken.

I don't recall Alanis Morrisette ever singing/covering the song, but perhaps she too wrote and recorded a song of the same name.

"*****" is a song that was released by Meredith Brooks in 1997 on her album Blurring the Edges. It was cowritten by Brooks and Shelly Peiken. Initially, some radio stations preferred not to mention the name of the song and would instead refer to it as "a song by Meredith Brooks". However, with the climbing popularity of the song, its name became more commonplace to announce on the air. When the song first hit the airwaves, most call-in listeners believed the song was by Alanis Morissette due to the similar sound and Morissette's success in rock music at the time. Later on, different remixes of the song became popular in dance clubs.

Shelly Peiken co-wrote the song with Meredith Brooks.

Meredith Brooks wrote it.

Meredith Brooks.
Alanis just covered it,
but since she's the
bigger name in the biz,
people assume it was
hers to begin with.

*funny how people change their answers, eh?
