Experimentally this is done by placing solid pieces of relatively pure metals into solutions containing cations of a different metal.

For example, a solid piece of copper will react with a silver ion solution to give solid silver and the copper in solution. Copper is considered "more reactive."

the most reactive metals tend to be alkali metals, like Li and K and Na. as you move right, across the periodic table, the level of reactivity goes down.
