Actually to answer this we need to understand what is sleep... for animals it is like suspeding activities & lying down & stoping all physical functions & turn off the brain activity....
For plants....
They do no physical work...
They dont have brain...
But , yes they have two processes going on in them
Photosynthesis
Respiration
& at night when sun is set...
One of the process is stopped which i think is like going in to a supended mode becoz they only breathe & not make food...
So it is up to you wether u call it sleep or not.....

I wouldn't call it sleep, but most plants needs cycles of day and night (different plants/different season will have different requirements as far as the length of time of each part of the cycle). The plants are regulated by light and temperature, but mostly light. As I said I wouldn't call it sleep, but the plant reduces metabolism and change functions at night. Sleep for us, and I believe all animals, are essential for brain function, but also for the whole body to regenerate resupply essential enzymes, rest muscles and things like that. Plants have no brain but still require time to regenerate, rest and resupply so in a way it could have a function correspondent to sleep, and be named sleep maybe for lack of a better term (although I'm not sure if there isn't one).

Poinsettias require at least eight hours of darkness in order to maintain the red color.
Tulips close up at night (when the fairies put their babies into them, or so I have been told, but I don't believe it).
So maybe plants do sleep.
Some plants are nocturnal and bloom at night but not during the day.

You have to look at the definition of sleeping. So no. We always want to apply human characteristics to non-human animals or objects, or attribute animal behaviour to human habits, like laughter.
As a kid I used to wonder if cats and dogs knew when we were laughing at them. Unless they are capable of experiencing embarrassment, the answer is no. â¥

Plants stop their cycle of photsynthesis when it is dark. Maybe this lull in activity could be construed as "sleep."
