It depends where you are as to which snake it is. If you are in the south west USA it could be a king snake, if you are in the north west Usa it might be a garter. If you are in the Mid west it could be a rat snake. If you are in the south around the Mississippi it might be a corn snake. If you are in Europe it may be a grass snake or an adder. Where are you?

Most likely a garter snake. Their main diet is usually small fish and they are often found in numbers around the edge of rivers or lakes where the small fish can be snagged in the shallows.

Well sounds like a sea snake, although they are found in the ocean!
If thats what it is, stay away they are very deadly!

UUMMMM.... Ribbon snakes are non venomus found in Iowa
Cottonmouth are very deadly but they are a dark-colored, heavy-bodied snake.

Could be a king snake or a rat snake, water mocassins are usually brown.
