Notre Dame has a few that are pretty well written in Stone.

Navy.
Michigan is always mid September.
Michigan State is always the weekend after.
USC (always the last game of the year if at the Coliseum).

They don't have trouble lining up games, they are a great draw. We have only had 1 home game since the sixties that was not sold out (and that was over a fall break when the students were not on campus). That is why Navy never plays them in Annapolis, it's always a much bigger venue like Ravens Stadium (this year) or The Meadowlands in New Jersey (2 years ago).

Right now I have the tentative schedules through 2010.

Go Irish!

There are three teams that Notre Dame will always play - Purdue, Navy, and Southern California. Michigan and Michigan State are almost always on the schedule, but Notre Dame did not play either of them in 1995 and 1996, and did not play Michigan in 2000 and 2001 (ND and Michigan playing each other on a regular basis only started in 1978, while ND and MSU, who play for the Megaphone Trophy, have played nearly every year since 1948).

Other than those five, they do like everyone else when it comes to a non-conference schedule - the two teams agree to play a certain number of times at a certain site.

They basically pick who they want to play. Every school negotiates their own Non-Conference Schedule, their conference then sets the conference schedule. Notre Dame, being ND, never has a hard time find opponents, as every game they play is televised.

They pick who they want to play and tell the college. Usually they can get that oppent and then they figure out how to set it so it won't conflict with the other school's schedule. Remember the other schools have a Confrence schedule and they try not to really break that up. Give them credit though as they do tend to play real opponents. They could play the cupcakes, which would hurt them a little, but instead they play games they know they could lose.

Notre Dame ALWAYS plays Navy. This is due to an agreement that they made in the WWII era.
