Be conservative. Don't bet on things where you need to chase cards.

Also...don't get all excited when you flop a Full House.

There are no short cuts to becoming a winning poker player. The pros rely on their knowledge and experience in order to put their opponents on a hand and make those amazing plays you see on TV. You will want to develop a tight/aggressive game. This means you are conservative with the hands you choose to play (usually less than 20% of the hands you are dealt), but once you do enter a pot you play it aggressively. Also don’t play while watching TV or while otherwise distracted because you will miss key opportunities and will win less in the end. Playing this way will do two things for you; you will develop a reputation as a stone cold killer at the poker table making other players less likely to call the few bluffs you attempt, and you're bank roll will last long enough for you to develop the experience necessary to make those fancy plays.

A bad call is worse than a bad fold.

Watch your image. At the beginning of a game, no one knows how you play. If you are taking a lot of pots without showing your cards, people will think you are bluffing, even if you aren't, which limits your ability to bluff later and makes people willing to draw into you. (Don't change your game to create an image, but be aware of what you look like to others so you know what they are going to do to you.)

Figure out the other guys two hole cards (you'd be surprised how many people don't bother with this.)

Know your odds on the draw. Don't draw from behind in limit. In no limit, you can draw from behind if you don't pay too much on the front, and charge them (make a larger bet-maybe actually attack their chip stack) on the turn or river when you make a hand.

Remember that if you are dominating a hand, you still have a chance to lose. Tournament play is a survival game rather than a cash-raking game. Take the chips when you can, but don't die. In a cash game, bet when you have the odds--don't worry about going broke, it'l even up in the long run.

Look for the idiots who overbet good starting hands, and play them with buster hands. If someone will only play AK, and you have 9Ts, throw in some chips and see the flop. That kind of player will keep throwing chips at his hand whether it hits or not. Just don't keep chasing when his cards hit! There are seven cards in most poker games, make the people that don't know this cry!

In 5 card draw or 7 card stud, play on the strength of your cards (it is too expensive to draw). In Omaha, play on the strength of your draw (the winner will have 1st, 2nd, or 3rd nuts, not two pair). Hold'em is someplace in between, and you really have a lot of options.

With a few exceptions, with a great hand I like to make the other guy decide to raise all in, rather than me raising all in and hoping they'll call.

Don't show your cards by your pre-flop action. If you play a lot of hands, play them all the same--make small bets or limp in. If you play few hands, raise fairly big (10xBB) early to get the garbage out. Don't combine these two strategies--choose one, switch in a longer tourney, but don't bet bad hands one way and good ones another. Either don't play the bad ones and bet the good ones (by bad I mean low-medium suited semi-connected--don't play rags ever unless it's dirt cheap) , or bet/limp into every hand. The first way, your opponents will know you only come with cards, and will fold to your bets. The other way, they don't know what you have, but you are playing a lot of low percentage hands.

I would say, as one of the previous answers mentioned, don't underestimate the practice that you can gain from free online poker sites. I myself am a fairly new practitioner of the game, and was nervous when going to play against some of my mates in real life, who are pretty hardcore players, despite having played a bit on one of the web sites. I absolutely cleaned up, and I would say that the practice was invaluable.

If you're playing with people you know; then they know you and what you're like. So you have to try and convince them that they can't judge what you're going to do. So my advice is to bet on a 'nothing hand' early on in the game. Ok you may have lost a little money (which won't be much because no-one wants to place high stakes early on) but then your fellow players won't know, later on, when you bet, whether you have a good hand or bad one.

whether you get good cards or bad cards, keep acting the same. Or try smiling when u have bad cards once in a while and frowning when you have good cards once in a while. the idea is to not give away the quality of your hand. Great players can read your body language. If female, i say dress sexy, it distracts many players and its like using your brain, just another weapon in your arsenal. Low cut blouses work wonders.

the way you bet tells a lot.. this is why people always want to see your hands when they fold. They learn by remembering what you did and how people play with certain hands (strong/weak)

change up your betting and as usual do not show ANY emotion. Its as simple as that and knowing the odds of each hand to win.

be very very very picky with your starting hands. dont get caught up in small pocket pairs and connectors taht arent suited. and also pay attention to your position in betting. this will also affect what hands you will play. always take the same amount of time to make your decision wether it be betting calling raising or folding. good players will time you.
