I have managed several bands, and the best tip I can tell you, is there is a lot of temperaments in musicians. These temperaments can make or break a band regardless of how great they are. Rehearsal time is always serious business but show time is having your material perfected and have fun, fun, fun on the stage. Keep the beverage out of the band members until after the show. No matter how great you think you are performing while your drinking, you ain't all that! Listen to your audience feed back. These are the people you are working for, so pay attention. Now, "Rock On"!!! I forgot the most important part! Hire a honest, smart, fast talking manager! Let them handle the paper trails and bookings and you handle the music!

From somebody thats been there and IS there: You should keep a LOT of things in mind, but above all the number one rule should be GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING. This will prevent a lot of hard feelings later. Hire people that you wouldn't mind spending 24 hours locked in a hotel room. I'd rather have nice people that are only "so-so" musicians than great musicians that are complete jerks. Study your craft, study how to promote the band, learn how to network with other bands, make sure all of your gear is in good working order and have backup stuff for the things that WILL get broken (microphone cords, etc.). Have backup stuff for whatever it is you use if you go on tour. Ask the other bands how they do it, and NEVER GIVE UP. Good luck!!!

In seeing local bands in my area, and having played for many years, one thing has always "ticked me off" to no end. And that's when a group is performing on stage and they take so damn much time in between songs. Talking to other band members or talking with people in the "wings".
The thing that I always stressed is...just get up there and hit 'em! Knock off all the standing around and chatting in between songs.
You just don't know how much air it takes out of your musical balloon after you just performed a great song and the excitement is lost because you take too much time in between songs.
And be up front with your band members. If you start creating miscommunication between members it makes for hard feelings and maybe someone walking out on you right before a gig.
And on a personal note...don't drink or use drugs and think you can play. Record yourself if or when you do these things...I guarantee when you hear it...it will sound like crap even though you thought you played the greatest gig on earth! You are just letting your band members down or your band is letting their fans down. Choose a place and time to be spellbound...the stage isn't no place to be showing your ignorance.
The best advice was what the manager gave you on this Q and the working musician...take that all in...it is gospel.

Practice, practice, practice; and by practice I don't mean spending 2 hours coming up with a clever name.
Some times just jamming things that come into your head over and over for a hour could turn into a new song.
It is also important to write songs about things you know, have seen or experienced. Rich high school kids writing about, living on the street or hunger turn into songs that can't be believed.
Don't be afraid to let people hear you, playing in front of people is the best practice.

Just remember its not all about the music think about your entrance, about putting on a show. Just talk to your band members and ask their opinion.
