My husband has been a plumber for 31 years. He does not suggest that anyone use Drano or Liquid Plumber unless you need a quick temporary fix on your drain. A natural non-toxic substitute is to pour some baking soda down the drain and follow it with some vinegar. The natural chemical reaction will bubble up and disturb the clog. Follow that by running lots of hot water to help the clog go all the way down the pipe. Baking soda can also be used in your dishwasher to clean it. Empty a small box of baking soda into your empty dishwasher. Run it through a complete cycle and it should clean out most of that gunky stuff that accumulates in the filters.

You either have a bad pump on your dishwasher or a hard blockage in the drain line. Drano can ruin your dishwasher and you may have to pay to repair or replace it yourself if you kill it with Drano, I would not use that. If you can't get maintenance to fix the problem, use bleach, about a cup, and run an empty load. Make sure you run the hot tap in the sink before you turn on the dishwasher so it fills with hot water at the beginning of the wash cycle. Try a second time if first attempt doesn't work. After that, write a formal complaint and keep a copy of the dated letter for evidence that you have a problem that they NEED to fix, per state law.

Drano & similar products are powerful caustics and I'd guess they would dissolve the plastic parts & coatings in the washer. DIshwashers use an internal pump to drain and this could have failed. More likely the drain itself: most use a rubber hose that connects to the kitchen sink drain - if the sink drains OK it's likely the rubber hose is clogged, kink or has been misrouted (it should be route in sort of a "U" loop: above the highest water level in washer near the unit, dropping lower to form a water trap then up to join the kitchen sink drain: has someone been rooting around under the sink and disturbed the hose?).

Dishwashers drain directly into the garbage disposal (if you have one) or the kitchen sink. If you are having drainage problems put the Draino into the sink.

No. Check drain to remove debris. Then use vinegar to wash through the machine.

Do that, and then buy a new dishwasher.
