Don't suggest self-eployment and freelance please - I know how pressured and unfree they can be. I am wondering if anyone has a 'common' job and manages to express himself/herself in it.. Or is every job mindnumbing?

Tommy.. Yes, and Yes. Don't worry, I'm nearly numb enough as I am at work - your comment has no effect. Try again.

I wish I had an answer, though Elmo's does warrant investigation.

I think my own downfall is my stubborn attitude to authority regardless of any creativity I have whilst in the employ of someone else. I think that to be ones own boss, though requiring effort, is the only way to maintain creative integrity.
If only...

Good question, I wonder that myself sometimes. I think if you just find the right job, which allows you the freedom to be creative then you can be creative in even things like just filing papers all day long. But if you´re lookin for a kind of job that is directly lookin for creativity (or at least, its supposed to be that way, until money comes into the picture) I would say the music industry. Cuz it wouldnt matter if you were a songwriter, a singer, or if you played a musical instrument. They all involve being creative. And even managing music, being an agent or handling finances of the music industry can be a creative occupation. They demand a level of skill, and you have to be creative to develop this skill, cuz your skill is your "style" and how you handle situations, how good a business person you are, you know? I think advertising in itself is another job that requires creativity. The art of selling one´s idea and showing the other person just how cool it is. Convincing people while still being an honest salesman is a pretty hard job. And in todays world, there´s gotta be a little bit of a salesman in all of us. Hey i know how you feel... sometimes i just feel like im doin the day to day mindnumbing work, and like i have no space to breathe for my creativity (im not at all saying that i have any here, its just that...i would like to find out though...and its rather hard when you dont get the opportunity). But hey, dont worry ok, you sound like someone who finds it important to keep your creativity and individuality alive, so im sure you´ll find a way to do just that. Good luck with everything, i hope you find a job that you really like. :)

Yes it is possible, unless your boss, your partner, your friend, your customer all have the same thought, same behaviour, same communication skill as you and most important is TRUST YOU, otherwise it is difficult to keep your creativity flows smoothly.
I have always have this kind of problem, my creativity is always blocked/baned by my superiors and this is killing my creativity, but on the other hand if i do jobs (free time jobs) for friends or customers which i know for a long time, the situation might be different, because they know us and trust us and gives the lowest restrictions possible.
What i can say is that on the full time job, it is difficult to do what i love to do and i have to listen and stand because i need the salary to survive. If i really want to do the creative work properly, there's no other choice: do for non-profit, i mean do works for myself, do works for competition or exhibition. That's the way to make us happy and keep us thinking we are creatives! I always do that to keep myself reminded i born for creating.
I totally understand your difficulty, just keep working and creating, your creativity will worth in the future!

Good luck!

i generally do temp work in finance, and problem solve new companies - that's creative. however if you mean actual enlightening creativity, then i think working for a living will numb that very quickly.
