Treat them as the adults they are and do not hide any facts from them.

Do not be condescending.

Have your patients write down their questions about their condition while they are waiting for you so they do not forget when they see you.

Remind them why you went to school...hopefully because you care about people and want to help...I know first hand that reimbursements are being decreased again...i.e. if you know a patient is having financial problems, offer the generic drug...bottom line is make your patients comfortable, so they can open up more to you.

I highly recommend you get the book "Healthcare for Less" by Michelle Katz. The physician I work with purchased a bunch of books for his patients and leaves a few copies in his waiting room for his patients to read. The book is all about how to save money in healthcare....there is some fantastic information in the book, and the patients have gained a new found respect for him, because he generally is concerned about how much his patients are paying for their healthcare. I purchased my copy of the book at Barnes and Noble, but he purchased a few at discount and got them delivered for free by www.amazon.com. I hope this helps!

He is trying to get a pharmaceutical company to pitch in instead of giving him pens and mugs he does not need. The books came out to less than $10 a piece which is under the limit of $24.99 (what a pharmaceutical company can spend on a doctor)...this way he gives back to his patients.

Understanding that doctors are under stress, I think if they took alittle more time talking and getting to know the patient

be alot more friendly towards patients - often dr's rush appointments / chats - take your time to LISTEN and EXPLAIN things - offer alternative treatments rather than prescriptions all the time.
